Research overview
While Enterovirus and Human parechovirus infections are often mild or asymptomatic in children, they can become severe in neonates. However, the identification of these viral species is not covered by health insurance in Japan, making real-time clinical feedback difficult. We conduct active surveillance using periodic viral PCR assays on stool samples from patients admitted to the NICU during epidemic periods. Furthermore, we perform genotyping to identify the detected species and identify factors associated with severe disease.
